The final 8 are on youtube. I think I really discounted a few of these because they were over a minute long. So the competition broke its own rules and chose some people who had videos over a minute. I think all of the people chosen had really decent portfolios, which is probably what it came down to, more so than the video, which probably makes good sense.

Now back to working on my portfolio.

Thanks to everyone for helping me out and passing me along. Thanks if you viewed my blog and left comments or viewed my video and left comments. Thanks if you followed me on twitter or facebook. Thanks if you were even interested. My video has almost 1500 views! I hope some super important people looked at it and were intrigued. My blog has also been getting a very steady amount of views each day, which is also encouraging.

As I said, I didn’t make it to the final 8. I’m excited to find out who did. The good news is that the sandwich board might actually get good use.

Do you guys think I should go to the live event? Pass out the old business card? Maybe someone will recognize me since I’m famous now.

I got an email from the Big Ad Gig telling me that the final 8 has all been notified. I think what I am supposed to take from that is that I didn’t make it to the final 8 because I haven’t been notified. I am a little surprised, but not super surprised. I was reading the rules the other day and read that the ad gig that is awarded is an entry level ad gig. They may have not chosen me based on my slight overqualifications. I think perhaps this should have been made more clear on the website. Or maybe really they just didn’t like my video. It was fun anyway, and if you’re out there job givers, I would love to work. I’ll be working on a few things in my portfolio so keep an eye on my website.

I don’t know yet who the final 8 are, but I will probably keep ya’ll posted. Check out all the entries.

Good news. The Big Ad Gig sent me an email saying that I made it through the first round of judging to the top 18 (out of 49 entries). Well I am not going to get my panties all in wad; I kind of expected to make it that far. They’ve sent out an email though and I imagine the 10 people that don’t get chosen are going to be disappointed. I know I will be if I don’t get chosen.

They also said the in the email to start booking travel just in case. Allz I need is a metrocard. Snap!

All the entries finally got uploaded to the Big Ad Gig channel. There are 49. There’s a lot of bad ones, and a few good ones. Several are over time limit so I hope that means they get thrown out. I strained pretty hard to get mine down to 60 seconds. I have the most views, second to the guy who fake proposed to his girlfriend Jessica. My mom might be responsible for a good handful of the views. And I’m sneaky, so I gave myself a killer comment and a high rating from my other account.

I looked at several the entrant’s resumes and books, and I noticed that a lot of them are just out of portfolio school and pretty young. I don’t know if that’s good or bad for me.

I didn’t explode to internet sensation status and get my own reality show on VH1 like I had hoped, but come on, I am no puppy that can’t roll over. But I did get a handful of people interested. I got some facebook fans and twitter followers, and I didn’t pay for them. My guest post on Please Feed the Animals got me some traffic and some killer advice, so thanks to Erik Proulx for that.

They will announce the 8 semi-finalists friday. Keep rooting for me!

I updated my resume a little bit to include some film work I have done on the side. So my website is updated, but the resume I sent to the judges is still old.

I’m still waiting for the Big Ad Gig channel to post all of the weekend’s entries, but in the meantime here’s something about a Big Ad instead of a Big Ad Gig. I think some of the entrants could have gotten confused and thought it was competition for a gig where you make big ads. This girl might have.

Anyway, this “Big Ad” is really cool, and it got lots of a attention when it first came out.

I am a little behind on the “blog post about this week’s Mad Men” train. My dvr messed up and I had to purchase it on Itunes. I was touched by a Kiernan Shipka’s wonderful performance as Sally Draper. I have always thought Sally was super adorable, but she brought a tear to my eye with her angry performance after her grandfather died. I have never seen someone with such a cute lisp so pissed off. All she needed was a hug, but her icy cold parents wouldn’t dare. That scene made the episode. Check out how cute her photos are here.

There are only 2 days left until the Big Ad Gig competition ends. I don’t want to get to excited just yet, but there are only 5 entries! crazy. I guess we can expect several more last minute entries to come in over the weekend. These are the highly intelligent and good-looking folks who will be judging the competition. What a terrific bunch of people!

They recently added a new special famous judge, Alex Bogusky, Creative Chairman at Crispin, Porter + Bogusky. Cool!

I saw on CNN today that for the first time in American History, the amount of women in the workplace is said to surpass that of men by the end of this year. A lot of this has to do with the types of jobs that are being lost, for example, the manufacturing and construction industries are suffering more than others.

And on the subject of career ladies, congratulations to Susan Credle! She was just appointed ECD of Leo Burnett. Awesome.

Here’s an interesting video from AdAge’s “Women to Watch” luncheon. Tiffany Kosel, CD and VP at Crispin had some great things to say on the topic of the overabundance of male Creative Directors.

I designed this poster for Brooklyn Skillshare’s benefit show!

The show was on friday, and apparently it went marvelously and they made $941. Unfortunately I was not able to attend because I had just had knee surgery, but it musta been fun. The Bk Skillshare event takes place in October. It’s a community event in which, for a small suggested donation, participants can learn practical DIY classes like screen printing and bike mechanics.

I really enjoyed last night’s amazing and appalling episode of Mad Men, and wow, did it make me squeamish. For one, Roger Sterling put on a black face and serenaded his wife in front of his laughing party guests. I admit that I laughed too, but it was more of shocked uncomfortable, thank-god-i-was-born-after-1960 sort of chuckle.

Also, this is nothing new, but it became especially apparent how uptight these uppety ad people are, especially the women. I could barely watch while “the wives” had boring, fake, awkward, wife-ish conversations. Everything was a competition in this episode, everyone was out to make other people look likes assholes, or at some point made to feel like an asshole. Peggy Olson was our giant exception for the evening. People even tried to make her look like an asshole, and she wouldn’t have it. w00t!

What would you do if you were at a party, and your friend couple broke out in the Charleston? Not a regular Charleston, but one where you make cheesy facial expressions and have side by side choreography straight out of a Shirley Temple movie? One where everyone turned to look. Shoot me if I ever became friends with a woman like Pete Campbell’s horrid wife.

So it’s monday. The Big Ad Gig competition ends in 7 days. And after the weekend, there are still only 2 entries. waaaaa? Weird. I am a little surprised. I mean I know a bunch of people were turned off by the embarrassment of the whole thing, but it is a national competition. I am still expecting a ton of last minute entries.
